SUPERNOVA 1998dk IN UGC 139

J. Y. King, M. Modjaz, T. Shefler, E. Halderson, W. D. Li, R. R. Treffers, and A. V. Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley, report their discovery of an apparent supernova during the course of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (cf. IAUC 6627) with the 0.8-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT). SN 1998dk was found and confirmed in unfiltered CCD images obtained on Aug. 19.4 (mag about 17.6) and 20.4 UT (mag about 17.0). The new object is located at R.A. = 0h14m32s.16, Decl. = -0o44'10".9 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 5".4 east and 3".1 north of the nucleus of UGC 139. A KAIT image obtained on Aug. 15.4 shows no star at this position (limiting mag about 18.5).
