SUPERNOVA 2001df IN MCG -04-51-5

P. Martin, M. Modjaz, and W. D. Li, University of California at Berkeley, report the discovery by LOTOSS (cf. IAUC 7514) of an apparent supernova (mag about 18.0) in unfiltered images taken with the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT) on June 25.4, July 11.4, and July 18.4 UT. An image taken on June 16.5 under poor conditions also showed a hint of the new object. SN 2001df is located at R.A. = 21h39m18s.15, Decl. = -25o29'36".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is 5".0 east and 3".4 north of the nucleus of MCG -04-51-5. A KAIT image taken on 2000 Nov. 27.2 showed nothing at this position (limiting mag about 19.0).
