SUPERNOVA 2002cw IN NGC 6700

M. Papenkova and W. D. Li, University of California at Berkeley, report the LOTOSS (cf. IAUC 7514) discovery of an apparent supernova on an unfiltered CCD image taken with the 0.8-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT) on May 16.5 UT (mag about 18.7). The new object was confirmed on an earlier image taken on May 4.5 at about the same brightness. SN 2002cw is located at R.A. = 18h46m02s.40, Decl. = +32o17'03".2 (equinox 2000.0), which is 25".0 west and 16".0 north of the nucleus of NGC 6700. A KAIT image taken on 2001 Oct. 1.2 showed nothing at this position (limiting mag about 19.5).
