SUPERNOVA 2002dn IN IC 5145

W. D. Li, University of California at Berkeley (UCB), reports the LOTOSS (cf. IAUC 7906) discovery of a supernova on unfiltered KAIT CCD images taken on June 15.5 (mag about 18.6) and 17.5 UT (mag about 18.7). SN 2002dn is located at R.A. = 21h54m22s.47, Decl. = +15o09'42".2 (equinox 2000.0), which is 8".8 west and 18".3 north of the nucleus of IC 5145. A KAIT image taken on May 31.5 showed nothing at this position (limiting mag about 19.0). A. V. Filippenko, R. Chornock, and R. J. Foley (UCB) report that inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 330-1000 nm), obtained on June 17 UT with the Shane 3-m reflector at Lick Observatory, shows that SN 2002dn is a supernova, probably of type Ic, resembling SN 1987M about 1-2 weeks past maximum brightness (Filippenko et al. 1990, A.J. 100, 1575). The Ca II near-infrared triplet and O I 777.4-nm troughs are strong, and the Si II 635.5-nm absorption line is unusually prominent for a type-Ic object.
