SUPERNOVA 2002gy IN UGC 2701

Further to IAUC 7972, B. Beutler and W. D. Li report the LOTOSS discovery of an apparent supernova (mag about 17.6) on an unfiltered CCD KAIT image taken on Oct. 16.4 UT. The new object is located at R.A. = 3h22m36s.45, Decl. = +9 28'22".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2".8 east and 3".0 south of the nucleus of UGC 2701. M. Hamuy, Carnegie Institution of Washington, confirmed SN 2002gy on J and H images taken with the Las Campanas Dupont 2.5-m telescope (+ WIRC) on Oct. 17.4. A KAIT image taken on Oct. 9.4 showed nothing at this position (limiting mag about 19.0).
