In 2007 I founded an international conference about the breakthrough science and technical innovation of high-contrast imaging. I called it the “Spirit of Lyot” after the French astronomer Bernard Lyot, who invented the solar coronagraph, which demonstrated the spirit of ingenuity in both science with technology.

The first Spirit of Lyot conference was held in 2007 at UC Berkeley, and further information can be found below. The second Spirit of Lyot was held in 2010 in Paris, France, with roughly 50% more attendees than the first conference. The third conference was June, 2015, in Montreal, Canada and had 300 attendees.  The fourth will be held in 2019 in Tokyo, Japan.

For the Berkeley 2007 conference we had 125 attendees from the U.S., Europe, Japan, Mexico and Australia. This was a 5-day conference with 14 invited review talks, 57 contributed talks, 44 posters and 1 panel discussion. The contributions are published electronically and listed in the ADS (and may be formally cited).
