NAME
extract - pulls data files off from Exabyte tape
SYNOPSIS
extract catfile [data_dir= [log_dir=] ]
DESCRIPTION
extract pulls off (as needed) the data files mentioned in the
observation catalog file (CAT file) contained on the command line and places
them on disk. These files should be generated by selecting the lines from the
CAT files of the targets and characteristics that you wish. The program then
looks to see whether the files are already on disk. If they are not, it
writes a C-shell script file extract.csh which contains instructions
prompting the operator to mount the proper data tape, then executes the
appropriate mt and tar commands to recover the data
files.
The program needs to know where to find the .LOG files and where to
(find and) store the data. These are traditionally stored under the same root
in the
subdirectories:
- ./CAT --location of LOG files
- ./Mondd ... data from date Mondd
At the telescope the name of the root directory is found from the DATA_DIR
symbol in the file
ait.config.
The directory in which this file lives
is in turn pointed to by the HOME_DIR environment variable. However, you may
specify the root directory on the command line using the data_dir
option. In addition you may want to read the LOG files from a
different root by using the log_dir
option.
Please read the file extract.csh before executing it, although the
operation of the extract program may be mysterious the resulting
script should not
be.
ENVIRONMENT
When running extract.csh In addition, the TAPE environment variable
must be the tape device. You may also need to adjust your PATH so that the
ok and bell programs are accessible. (The latter is important
with the slow rate of tape
operations.)
BUGS
A lot of the problems stem from deficiencies in our method of storing and
cataloging images. In particular that the telescope name is not present in
the CAT
files.
