Supernova Search Reference Images

The supernova search needs a standards of comparison to see whether there are any stars present in the new image that were not present in the old one.

We store two files for each galaxy:

.fts file with an image of the galaxy
.ref containing list of fiducial stars

Both types of file are stored in the $DATA_DIR/sn/ref directory.

The .ref files are ascii and contain the FITS header from the observation and the starnumber row col and approximate R magnitude. The aperture and monst used to derive the photometry are stored in the header.

Reference images are derived from the best search images. Where best is an empirical blend of: good seeing, low sky background, bright images and good pointing. The mkref Cshell script is used to generate the image.
