Even when electrons are not bound to atoms, if you crowd them
enough they will occupy all the low energy states. More crowding forces new
electrons into higher energy states. This provides a pressure without depending on
generating heat.

pressure. More pressure requires higher density. Adding mass makes the object smaller!
