The Promise and Challenges of Adaptive Secondary Mirrors. Phil Hinz (U. of Arizona) Adaptive optic systems that are integrated into the telescope, rather than as an add on system, can provide optimal IR and wide-field AO observing modes. The MMT AO system, with its adaptive secondary, is currently unique in the community in providing this capability, and will soon be joined by similar systems for LBT and the Magellan telescopes. The systems require unique approaches to calibration and operation. I will describe the MMT system operation, and present some of the results with it. In addition, I will provide a status update on the LBT AO system, which is currently undergoing commissioning at the telescope.
