Aspen With Kids Under 18 months
Daycare
Plan ahead!! The usual physics Aspen stay of 3 weeks is too short for most of
the usual centers, including the few that will consider children under
18 months.
Kid's First (970-920-5363) will give you a list of places
(here is their
2006 Dec. list),
people also place ads, use agencies, whatever. It takes planning.
A link to child care in Aspen in the
yellow pages is here.
- There is a web site at
ski-aspen.net as well, I am
not sure how they choose the places they list.
- The Aspen Times
also has a classified section.
- Aspen Ski Company (970-925-1220) maintains a list of babysitters (at the
Camp Aspen-Snowmass desk). These people have indicated that they are
interested in babysitting, and have differing backgrounds and skills (this is
not a referral service, just a list of people who are interested, so you
should call them and their references to find out if they are a good fit for
you). They do not represent the Camp, and set their prices individually (the
list for summer 2007 should be put together by June 22).
Medical
-
Aspen Valley Hospital
(Castle Creek Road, Free #3 Bus from town) for
emergencies.
- Aspen Valley Pediatrics (970-925-5880, 630 E. Hyman, Aspen)
For other things, e.g. suspected ear infections.
- Pharmacy
Carl's Pharmacy (306 E. Main St., 970-925-3273)
Tom's clinic pharmacy is also listed in the phone book, I have
never used them and don't know their intended clients (100 E. Main
St. #102 970-925-8837)
Baby Stuff
- The Center has some cribs, strollers, high chairs and safety gates
- Baby's Away (970-920-1699) will rent equipment (they deliver)
- Carl's Pharmacy (306 E. Main St., 970-925-3273) sells gates and other baby stuff, e.g.
cups, some clothes, toys, etc.
- Also some things at grocery stores:
City Market (711 E. Cooper) and Clark's Market (300 Puppy Smith)
Food
Larger selection of baby food at Clark's (300 Puppy Smith),
also some at City Market (711 E. Cooper).
Clothes
Carl's has some baby clothes, the Gap in town has a large selection,
Short Sport (toy store) has some (mostly swim/hats),
Susie's (consignment) has a bit, various tourist shops have
T-shirts, sweaters and onesies and bibs. There are also some extraordinarily
expensive stores!
Parks for 18 months and below
Many of these parks have wood chips on the ground which kids of
a certain age try to eat.
- Herron Park
swings, safe stream to play in, (somewhat older kids') climbing structure
- Triangle Park
swings, small climbing structure for very little ones
- Wagner Park
Swings, climbing things, more for older kids.
- Yellow Brick Playground (1st and Bleeker)
Open to public after hours and on weekends. Lots of things to roll
around, climb, swing on, etc. Many of the toys for younger children
are now locked up unfortunately.
- The music festival school (number 10 bus, need to drive there) has
two ponds, people practicing music and a small playground (it is
a private pre-k up school during the winter). It can get buggy from
the ponds.
- There are other parks also, this list is not exhaustive.
The City of Aspen has a list of parks
here.
Other activities
-
The Aspen Recreation Center
has an extensive indoor water park (it can be reached on bus or on a paved
trail 2 miles from town), many very small children are there in floatation
devices.
- See the list under local activities at
www.mountainparent.com
