In July, 2009, a comet apparently crashed into the atmosphere of Jupiter in a fashion similar to the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet impact in 1994. We obtained one of the earliest infrared images of the impact site using Keck Observatory, confirming that the feature was an impact that deserved significant scientific scrutiny by other telescopes, including Hubble.
